They were an actual group that performed for years including before they got a chance to record (yup, I saw them). Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were nothing like the Archies. Regardless of how much the later records were Melle Mel records as the group was breaking up circa '83, not only were they a real group but they were, like, the leaders, I remember kind of waiting with excitement and anticipation for the next new single from them from Birthday Party through The Message. Here's some audio of the group in concert in '78 even before the were the Furious Five, still just the 4 MCs. I always wondered how different history might have been if early hip hop had been recorded as it sounded performed live - very different from what wound up on records, even Adventures on the Wheels of Steel. But the early producers of hip hop on record made a choice to put the rappers out in front of a live band playing grooves instead of recording what hip hop actually sounded like. In fact, Flash was really the star, not the rappers - hip hop in its early days was really about the DJs and their scratching and break beat creativity.
